A Scarecrow is, essentially, a decoy, though traditionally, a human figure (or mannequin) dressed in old clothes, stuffed with straw or hay and placed in fields by farmers to discourage birds such as crows or sparrows from disturbing and feeding on recently cast seed and growing crops.
Fairport has had a tradition of merchants putting Scarecrows outside their business during the month of October and this has turned into a festival of sorts...where town residents can vote for the "best" Scarecrow in the Village.
