Another Big Difference...

This is probably the biggest difference between the US and the Czech Republic.

Here, one can purchase a gun in many different types of stores, not just in a "Gun Shop". Wal Mart sells guns, as well as other sporting good stores; the same stores that sell Nike running shoes, snow boards and bicycles.

The above photo shows the newsprint advertisement which was inserted into the Sunday morning paper advertising some major weapons for sale.

But although most anyone can buy a gun... No.. we all do not carry guns nor does everyone own a gun.

But this advertisement even surprised me... for I am still in the "Czech" mode of living I think for I was a bit shocked at seeing this insert in the newspaper.

  1. it is very important to realize that a gun cannot be purchased without a formal permit. Rifles and shotguns can be purchased (below a certain gauge and caliber), but pistols/handguns/anything that is concealable requires the most tedious approval process. One cannot just walk into a wal-mart and purchase a 6-shooter.

The average amount of time it take to receive a gun permit in New York is roughly 11 months.
